The AI infrastructure race is heating up, and British startup Nscale has just cemented its place as one of Europe's most valuable tech companies. With a fresh $14.6 billion valuation following a massive $2 billion Series C round, Nscale now stands alongside heavyweights like Helsing and Mistral AI as one of the continent's latest decacorns. The funding round, described by the company as the largest in European history, signals a seismic shift in how the world thinks about AI compute infrastructure.
High-Profile Board Additions
Adding to the momentum, Nscale announced that three high-profile figures are joining its board of directors. Former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg, former Yahoo president Susan Decker, and former U.K. deputy prime minister Nick Clegg will now help guide the company's strategic direction. These appointments bring a powerful combination of Silicon Valley leadership experience and global policy expertise, underscoring Nscale's ambitions to become a dominant force not just in Europe but across the world.
A Funding Round Built for Scale
The $2 billion Series C was co-led by Norwegian energy conglomerate Aker and New York-based investment firm 8090 Industries. Notable participants include Dell, Nvidia, Lenovo, Nokia, Citadel, Jane Street, and Point72. The round also incorporates a $433 million pre-Series C SAFE from October, backed by Blue Owl, Dell, Nvidia, and Nokia. With Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan supporting the raise, speculation about an upcoming IPO has intensified. CEO Josh Payne has confirmed that the company may seek to go public as early as this year to fuel further expansion.
Stargate Norway: A Bold Infrastructure Vision
At the heart of Nscale's strategy lies Stargate Norway, an ambitious AI infrastructure project built in partnership with Aker. The project aims to deploy 100,000 Nvidia GPUs by the end of 2026, with OpenAI already signed on as an initial customer. Under the new arrangement, Aker's joint venture with Nscale will be fully managed by the startup, consolidating delivery and governance under a single roof. This move is expected to streamline operations and accelerate deployment timelines for one of Europe's most critical AI infrastructure initiatives.
Expanding the Global Footprint
Nscale's ambitions extend well beyond Norway. Last October, the company signed an expanded deal with Microsoft to bring approximately 200,000 Nvidia GPUs to three data centers in Europe and one in the United States, in collaboration with Dell. The new Series C funding is expected to accelerate development across Europe, North America, and Asia, while expanding the company's engineering and operations teams. Additionally, the company raised $1.4 billion in debt last month through a GPU-backed delayed draw term loan to finance its growing cluster of data centers across Europe.
Vertical Integration as a Competitive Edge
What sets Nscale apart from many competitors is its commitment to vertical integration. Rather than focusing on a single layer of the AI stack, the company controls everything from energy sourcing and data center construction to compute orchestration and software platforms. This end-to-end approach gives Nscale greater control over costs, performance, and reliability—a critical advantage in an industry where demand for compute resources is growing exponentially faster than supply.
Sustainability at the Core
Nscale is also positioning itself as a responsible player in the AI infrastructure space. The company has pledged to harness low-cost renewable energy sources, reuse waste heat generated by its data centers, invest in local skills development, and contribute to regional infrastructure. These commitments are especially relevant in Norway, where access to abundant hydroelectric power makes large-scale AI computing both economically and environmentally attractive.
The Road Ahead
With a war chest of billions, a board packed with global leaders, and an infrastructure vision that spans continents, Nscale is clearly positioning itself for a defining chapter. Whether through an IPO or continued private growth, the company's trajectory suggests that Europe is no longer content to play second fiddle to Silicon Valley in the AI infrastructure race. Nscale's rise is a powerful statement: the future of AI compute will be built globally, and Europe fully intends to lead from the front. For investors, governments, and the broader tech industry, this is a company worth watching very closely in the months ahead.
