What is Ideogram?
Ideogram is an image generator with a speciality: it renders readable text inside images, which most image models still handle badly.
Its other claim is character consistency. Ideogram describes itself as "the first character consistency model that works with just one reference image" — meaning the same person or character can appear across a set of images from a single sample rather than a trained model.
Those two things together define who it is for. If your output is posters, logos, ad creative, book covers, social graphics or anything where words appear in the picture, typography is the whole problem, and it is the problem Ideogram is built to solve.
It is available free on the web and on iOS. It launched on Product Hunt in 2024, where Ideogram 2a reached #5 of the day on 1 March 2025. Its community signal there is thin: 451 followers and a 5.0 rating from only 3 reviews. A perfect score from three people is not evidence of much, and we would not weight it.
Prices come from ideogram.ai/pricing, read on 24 September 2026. The site returns 403 to ordinary fetches, so it was read through a reader proxy.
Is Ideogram free?
There is a free tier, but it is qualified in a way worth reading twice. Credits are described as slow credits, "weekly for eligible accounts".
That is Ideogram's own wording, and it does two things at once. "Weekly" sets the refresh rate. "For eligible accounts" makes the allowance conditional on criteria Ideogram does not publish — so the free tier is not a guaranteed quantity the way a stated monthly number would be.
The free plan also limits you to:
- 1 running or queued generation at a time, against 8 on Plus and 32 on Pro.
- No private generation — see below.
- No commercial use. Commercial rights are listed from the Plus plan upward.
So the free tier is for trying the model, not for producing work — both because of what you may make and what you may do with it.
Free output is public
Private generation is a paid feature on Ideogram. It is listed on Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise, and it is absent from the free plan.
The practical meaning is that images made on the free tier are visible to others rather than kept to your account. For a great deal of experimentation that is irrelevant. For some work it is disqualifying.
Think about it before you generate, not after: an unreleased product name, a client's campaign concept, a book cover under embargo, or anything covered by an NDA should not be typed into a free Ideogram account. The cheapest plan that makes generation private is Plus at $15 a month billed annually, which is $180 for the year.
This pairs with the commercial-use restriction. The free plan neither keeps your work private nor lets you sell it, which together define it clearly as an evaluation tier.
How much does Ideogram cost?
Plus is $15 a month billed annually ($180 a year). Pro is $42 a month billed annually ($504 a year). Team is $20 a user a month billed annually, minimum two users.
| Plan | Price | Credits a month | Credits per dollar | Queue | Private |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Slow credits, weekly, for eligible accounts | — | 1 | No |
| Plus | $15/mo ($180/yr) | 1,000 | 67 | 8 | Yes |
| Pro | $42/mo ($504/yr) | 3,500 | 83 | 32 | Yes |
| Team | $20/user/mo ($240/user/yr) | 1,500 per user | 75 | Largest | Yes |
| Enterprise | Sales | Custom | — | Custom | Yes |
Pro is the best rate at 83 credits per dollar, then Team at 75, then Plus at 67 — our arithmetic from the published credits and prices.
The spread is modest, about 24% between best and worst, so the rate alone should not decide the plan. The queue depth probably should: 8 concurrent generations on Plus against 32 on Pro is a four-fold difference in how fast you can explore, and that changes the working day more than the credit rate does.
All paid plans carry unlimited slow credits alongside the fast ones, so running out of credits slows you down rather than stopping you. Pro adds batch generation and quality export.
Note that every price is quoted billed annually. The pricing page does not show a month-to-month rate, so the real commitment at Plus is $180 up front, not $15.
What one credit buys — and what we could not verify
We cannot tell you how many images one Ideogram credit produces, because Ideogram does not publish it anywhere we could reach.
The obvious source, help.ideogram.ai, does not resolve — checked on 24 September 2026. The pricing page gives per-plan credit totals but no conversion from credits to images, and unlike Krea or Synthesia, Ideogram publishes no rate card.
We would rather say so than estimate. A credits-per-image figure invented from a competitor's rates or from forum arithmetic would look like a fact and be a guess, and pricing guesses are exactly what makes tool directories untrustworthy.
What this means for you: 1,000 credits a month on Plus is a number you cannot convert into a quantity of work before you subscribe. The mitigation is the unlimited slow credits on every paid plan — you will not be hard-stopped, only slowed. If you need certainty, spend a month on Plus and measure before committing to Pro.
Ideogram vs Krea
Specialist against generalist, and the free tiers fail in different ways.
Ideogram does one class of job unusually well: text inside images, and a character held consistent from a single reference. Krea is a workspace — many models, real-time canvas control, upscaling to 22K, LoRA training and video in the same subscription.
If you are making a poster with a headline on it, Ideogram. If the generated image is the first step in a longer piece of design work, Krea.
On free tiers: Krea's is a hard, knowable budget of about one image a day. Ideogram's is unknowable in a different way — the credits are conditional on eligibility and cannot be converted into images. Neither allows commercial use; Krea's licence starts at Pro, Ideogram's at Plus.
Who Ideogram suits, and who it does not
It suits anyone whose images contain words. That sounds narrow and is not: social graphics, ad creative, posters, packaging mockups, book covers, logo exploration and thumbnails all live or die on typography, and it remains the weakest area of most competing models. Single-reference character consistency is the second reason, and it matters for anyone producing a series rather than a picture.
Pro at $42 suits high-volume work specifically because of the 32-deep queue and batch generation, not because of the credit rate.
It does not suit confidential work on the free plan, where generation is public. It does not suit anyone who needs to budget precisely, since credits cannot be converted into images from any published source. It does not suit month-to-month buyers, since only annual pricing is shown. And with three Product Hunt reviews behind it, there is very little community evidence to weigh either way.
What to use instead of Ideogram, and for which job
Krea — when generation is the start of the work. Many models, real-time canvas control, upscaling to 22K, LoRA style training and video in one subscription. Choose Ideogram instead when you need typography specifically.
Plus rather than free, for anything confidential. Private generation begins at $15 a month billed annually. Free output is visible to others, which rules it out for NDA work, unreleased names and client concepts.
Pro rather than Plus, for exploratory volume. The reason is the queue: 32 concurrent generations against 8. The credit rate difference is only about 24%, so concurrency is the better argument.
