Two of Silicon Valley's biggest names are doubling down on their decades-long relationship. Google and Intel announced an expanded multiyear partnership on Thursday for Google Cloud to continue utilizing Intel AI infrastructure and to co-develop next-generation processors.

The deal comes at a critical time for the tech industry, where the race to build AI infrastructure has created massive demand not just for GPUs but also for the less glamorous yet equally essential CPUs that keep AI systems running.

What the Deal Includes

Under the expanded partnership, Google Cloud will use Intel's Xeon processors, including the latest Xeon 6 chips, for AI, cloud, and inference tasks. Google has relied on Intel's various Xeon processors for decades, making this a natural extension of a well-established relationship.

But the partnership goes beyond off-the-shelf chips. The two companies will also expand the co-development of custom infrastructure processing units (IPUs), which help accelerate and manage data center tasks by offloading them from CPUs. This chip development partnership, which began in 2021, will now focus on custom ASIC-based IPUs.

Intel declined to share any pricing details for the deal.

Why CPUs Matter in the AI Era

While GPUs have dominated headlines as the powerhouse behind AI model training, CPUs play an equally vital role in the broader AI ecosystem. GPUs are used for developing and training AI models, but CPUs are crucial for running AI models and within general AI infrastructure.

Think of it this way: GPUs are the engines that build AI, but CPUs are the backbone that keeps the entire data center operating handling networking, storage, scheduling, and the countless tasks that support AI workloads at scale. A Growing CPU Shortage

The timing of this deal is no coincidence. More companies have been turning their focus to CPUs in recent months as a growing shortage has emerged for the chips. The AI boom has stretched global chip supply chains to their limits, and while much of the public attention has focused on GPU shortages particularly Nvidia's in-demand hardware the CPU market is facing its own crunch.

SoftBank-owned Arm Holdings recently announced the Arm AGI CPU, the first chip the semiconductor giant has produced in-house in its 35-year history, amid the worldwide CPU crunch. That move underscored just how urgent the supply situation has become.

What This Means for Intel

For Intel, this partnership is a lifeline at a transformative moment. The chipmaker has faced years of challenges losing market share to AMD, struggling with manufacturing delays, and watching Nvidia dominate the AI chip narrative. But the CPU shortage and growing demand for balanced AI infrastructure have given Intel a renewed opportunity.

By deepening its relationship with Google one of the world's largest cloud providers and AI developers Intel secures a high-profile customer that validates the continued importance of its Xeon platform in the AI age. In recent days alone, Anthropic announced a massive compute deal with Google and Broadcom for 3.5 gigawatts of TPU capacity, while Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy took direct aim at Intel and Nvidia in his annual shareholder letter, touting Amazon's own custom chip efforts.

The message from every major tech company is clear: winning the AI race isn't just about building the best models. It's about controlling the infrastructure the chips, the data centers, the networking that makes those models possible. Google's expanded Intel partnership is another piece in that puzzle, ensuring the search giant has access to the diverse chip supply it needs as AI workloads continue to explode.
