Elon Musk's social media platform X has launched two major new features powered by xAI's Grok models: automatic post translation across all languages and an in-app AI photo editor. Both updates were announced on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 by X's Head of Product Nikita Bier and are currently rolling out to iOS users worldwide.

The moves mark another step in X's strategy of embedding Grok deeply into every layer of the platform — from search and post composition to now translation and image editing.

Auto-Translation Goes Global

The automatic translation feature replaces the old tap-to-translate system with a fully automated process. Posts written in any language are now translated into the reader's preferred language by default, powered entirely by Grok's language models rather than third-party services like Google Translate.

Users who prefer to read posts in their original language can turn off auto-translation for specific languages by tapping the gear icon on any translated post. Bier noted that the quality of Grok-powered translations has improved substantially over the past couple of months.

The strategic thinking behind this move is straightforward. By dissolving language barriers at the feed level, X is betting it can dramatically expand the reach of every post on the platform. A tweet written in Japanese or Arabic can now surface in the feeds of English-speaking users without any friction — potentially unlocking entirely new patterns of global engagement that were previously limited by language silos.

Other platforms have experimented with similar approaches. Reddit has been testing machine translation for years, and Meta has built translation layers into Facebook and Instagram. But X's implementation is notably aggressive — it is automatic by default, not opt-in.

AI Photo Editor Brings Grok Into Image Editing

Alongside translation, X is rolling out a revamped photo editor on iOS that puts Grok's AI capabilities directly into the post composer. The editor includes standard tools like drawing, text overlays, and a blur tool for hiding sensitive details such as faces, credit card numbers, or other private information.

The standout feature, however, is the ability to edit images using natural language prompts. Users can type a request like "display this photo as a painting in a museum" and Grok will generate a modified version of the image accordingly. It works similarly to AI editing features already available in Google Photos and ChatGPT, but the key difference is that it lives directly inside X's posting workflow — no need to switch to a separate app.

X confirmed that it plans to bring both the photo editor and translation features to Android soon.

A Controversial History With AI Images

The launch of AI-powered image editing on X comes with significant baggage. Earlier this year, the platform faced global backlash after its previous Grok image generation feature allowed users to create sexualised and manipulated images — including depictions of minors and public figures — with virtually no restrictions.

The fallout was severe. X was forced to restrict Grok's image generation capabilities to paying subscribers only and removed the ability to create images of real people in suggestive contexts. xAI currently faces a class-action lawsuit from teenagers who allege their photos were used to generate exploitation material through Grok. The European Union has also opened an investigation into the platform over these concerns.

This history makes the new photo editor a calculated risk. While the feature appears to focus on creative editing rather than unrestricted generation, the line between the two can blur quickly — especially on a platform with hundreds of millions of users and a track record of moderation challenges.

Why This Matters

X's dual rollout of translation and AI photo editing reflects a broader industry trend: social media platforms are racing to embed AI into every core interaction. Meta has woven its AI assistant across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Google continues to push Gemini into its Workspace and Photos products. Microsoft has layered Copilot across its entire product suite.

X is following the same playbook but with a unique twist — it is building on its own in-house AI through xAI, giving it tighter integration and potentially faster iteration cycles than competitors relying on third-party models.

For users, the practical benefits are clear. Auto-translation means a more global feed without any extra effort. The AI photo editor means quicker, more creative posts without leaving the app. Whether X can deliver these features responsibly — given its recent AI controversies — remains the bigger question heading into 2026.
