Ideogram Review: Pricing, Free Plan and Credit Limits

Image generator that renders readable text inside pictures

Ideogram is an image generator with one speciality: it renders readable text inside images, which most image models still handle badly. It is aimed at anyone making posters, logos, ad creative, book covers or social graphics. It is free on the web and on iOS, Plus costs $15 a month billed annually, and Pro is $42 a month billed annually.

Quick verdict

The free tier is a trial, not a working plan. Output is public, commercial use is not allowed, and the weekly credits depend on an eligibility rule Ideogram does not spell out. The paid side has its own catch. Every price is quoted billed annually, and Ideogram publishes no conversion from credits to images, so you are committing a year of money without being able to turn 1,000 credits into a quantity of work.

Prices come from ideogram.ai/pricing, read on 24 September 2026. On Product Hunt, Ideogram 2a reached #5 of the day on 1 March 2025. A perfect score from three people is not evidence of much, and we would not weight it.

What is Ideogram used for?

Images that have to contain readable words

This is the reason to choose Ideogram at all. Posters, ad creative, social graphics, packaging and thumbnails all need a headline that renders correctly instead of as approximate letter shapes, and typography is the problem the model is built around.

Logo and wordmark exploration

Typography-first generation makes it usable for early identity work, where dozens of directions are worth seeing quickly. The 32-deep queue on Pro is what makes that volume practical.

A character across a series

Ideogram describes itself as "the first character consistency model that works with just one reference image". The same person or character can appear across a set of images from a single sample rather than a trained model, which suits comics, storyboards, explainer sequences and campaign sets.

Confidential concept work, on a paid plan

Private generation starts at Plus. For anything under NDA or embargo, $15 a month billed annually is the entry price of keeping your output to yourself.

Is Ideogram free?

Yes, with conditions worth reading twice. The credits are described as slow credits, "weekly for eligible accounts". That is Ideogram's own wording. "Weekly" sets the refresh rate, and "for eligible accounts" makes the allowance conditional on criteria Ideogram does not publish, so it is not a guaranteed quantity the way a stated monthly number would be.

The free plan also limits you to:

  • 1 running or queued generation at a time, against 8 on Plus and 32 on Pro.
  • No private generation. Free output is public.
  • No commercial use. Commercial rights are listed from the Plus plan upward.

That makes it a place to judge typography quality before paying, which is the thing you are buying. It is not a place to produce work, both because of what you may make and what you may do with it.

Why free output being public matters

Private generation is listed on Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise and is absent from the free plan, so images made on the free tier are visible to others rather than kept to your account. For plenty of experimentation that is irrelevant. For some work it rules the free plan out: an unreleased product name, a client's campaign concept, a book cover under embargo, or anything covered by an NDA should not go into a free account.

The cheapest plan that makes generation private is Plus at $15 a month billed annually, which is $180 for the year. Together with the commercial-use restriction, the free plan neither keeps your work private nor lets you sell it.

How much does Ideogram cost?

Plus is $15 a month billed annually ($180 a year). Pro is $42 a month billed annually ($504 a year). Team is $20 a user a month billed annually, with a minimum of two users. Enterprise is quoted by sales.

Team$20/user/mo ($240/user/yr)1,500 per user75LargestYes

The credits-per-dollar column is our arithmetic from the published credits and prices: Pro is the best rate at 83, then Team at 75, then Plus at 67. The spread is only about 24%, so the rate alone should not pick your plan. Queue depth should. Eight concurrent generations on Plus against 32 on Pro is a four-fold difference in how fast you can explore, and that changes a working day more than the credit rate does.

All paid plans carry unlimited slow credits alongside the fast ones, so running out slows you down instead of stopping you. Pro adds batch generation and quality export. Enterprise adds a custom credit allowance, private custom models, volume API discounts and priority support. Team adds central billing and administration and collaboration features.

Because the page shows no month-to-month rate, the real commitment at Plus is $180 up front, not $15.

What one credit buys

Ideogram does not publish how many images a credit produces, and we will not guess. The pricing page gives per-plan credit totals but no credits-per-image rate, and the obvious place to look, help.ideogram.ai, did not resolve when we checked on 24 September 2026. Unlike Krea or Synthesia, Ideogram has no rate card we could find.

In practice, 1,000 credits a month on Plus is a number you cannot convert into work before you subscribe. The unlimited slow credits soften it: you will be slowed, not hard-stopped. If you need certainty, spend a month on Plus and measure before moving to Pro.

Ideogram vs Krea

Specialist against generalist, and the free tiers fail in different ways. Ideogram does one class of job unusually well: text inside images, and a character held consistent from a single reference. Krea is a workspace, with many models, real-time canvas control, upscaling to 22K, LoRA style training and video in the same subscription.

If you are making a poster with a headline on it, pick Ideogram. If the generated image is the first step in a longer piece of design work, pick Krea. On free tiers, Krea's is a hard, knowable budget of about one image a day, while Ideogram's cannot be pinned down because eligibility is undefined and credits cannot be converted into images. Neither allows commercial use; Krea's licence starts at Pro, Ideogram's at Plus.

Who Ideogram suits, and who it does not

It suits anyone whose images contain words. That sounds narrow and is not: social graphics, ad creative, posters, packaging mockups, book covers, logo exploration and thumbnails all depend on typography, which remains the weakest area of most competing models. Single-reference character consistency is the second reason, and it matters if you produce a series rather than one picture. Pro at $42 suits high-volume work because of the 32-deep queue and batch generation, not the credit rate.

Skip it for confidential work on the free plan, where generation is public. Skip it if you need to budget precisely, since no published source converts credits into images. Month-to-month buyers will not find a rate they can use. And with three Product Hunt reviews behind it, there is very little community evidence to weigh either way. Choose Plus over free for anything confidential, and Pro over Plus when you explore in volume.

Ideogram pros and cons

Pros

  • Renders typography inside images, which is its whole reason to exist
  • Character consistency from one reference image rather than a trained model
  • Unlimited slow credits on every paid plan, so running out slows you rather than stopping you
  • Pro has the best credit rate (about 83 per dollar) and a 32-deep queue, four times Plus
  • Free on the web and iOS, so the model can be judged before any commitment

Cons

  • Free output is public, and private generation starts at Plus
  • Free credits are weekly for eligible accounts, with eligibility undefined
  • No commercial use on the free plan
  • No published credits-per-image conversion, so allowances cannot be turned into a quantity of work
  • Every paid price is quoted billed annually, with no month-to-month rate shown
  • Only 3 Product Hunt reviews, so little community evidence either way

The bottom line on Ideogram

Best for

  • Images containing readable text
  • Logo and wordmark exploration
  • Characters across a series

Ideogram FAQ

Is Ideogram free?

Yes, but with conditions. Ideogram describes free credits as slow credits, weekly for eligible accounts, and does not publish the eligibility criteria. Free users also get one generation at a time, no private generation and no commercial use, so it works as an evaluation tier.

How much does Ideogram cost?

Plus is $15 a month billed annually ($180 a year), Pro is $42 a month billed annually ($504 a year), and Team is $20 a user a month billed annually with a two-user minimum. Enterprise is quoted by sales. No month-to-month rate is shown. Checked 24 September 2026.

Are Ideogram images private?

Not on the free plan. Private generation is listed on Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise, so free output is visible to others. The cheapest private option is Plus at $15 a month billed annually, which is the plan to use for anything under NDA or an unreleased client concept.

How many images does one Ideogram credit make?

Ideogram does not publish a conversion. Its pricing page gives per-plan credit totals but no credits-per-image rate, and help.ideogram.ai did not resolve when checked on 24 September 2026. Every paid plan has unlimited slow credits, so running out slows you rather than stopping you.

Which Ideogram plan is best value?

Pro has the best credit rate: 3,500 credits for $42 is about 83 per dollar, against 75 on Team and 67 on Plus. The spread is only about 24%, so queue depth is the better reason to choose: Plus runs 8 concurrent generations and Pro runs 32.

Can I use Ideogram images commercially?

On paid plans, yes. Commercial use is listed on Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise and is not included on the free plan. The cheapest plan for client or commercial work is Plus at $15 a month billed annually, which is also the first plan with private generation.
