India has become the largest market for ChatGPT Images 2.0 since its launch last week. The AI image generation upgrade drove 5 million downloads in India during launch week — more than double the 2 million in the US. But globally, the response has been more measured. Overall engagement grew just 1 percent. The feature is a phenomenon in emerging markets and a modest update everywhere else.

India Leads by a Wide Margin

OpenAI confirmed that India is the top market for Images 2.0. Indian users are primarily using the tool for self-expression — creating studio-style portraits from everyday photos, social media-ready images, fantasy-themed visuals, and stylized avatars. Users are also restoring older family photos and creating cinematic portrait collages.

The pattern echoes what happened with Google's Nano Banana image model, which also saw its strongest early traction in India. India has consistently been ChatGPT's largest market by user count, and the country's appetite for AI image tools appears to be significantly higher than anywhere else.

Images 2.0 includes improvements specifically relevant to Indian users. Better rendering of non-Latin text — including Hindi and Bengali — makes the tool more useful for creating images with local language text. New thinking capabilities allow the model to refine outputs and generate multiple variations from a single prompt.

Emerging Markets Spike, Global Growth Is Flat

Third-party data from Sensor Tower and Similarweb tells a more nuanced story. ChatGPT app downloads rose 11 percent week-over-week globally after the launch. But daily active users and sessions grew only about 1 percent. Web traffic increased just 1.6 percent.

The sharp contrast between downloads and engagement suggests that Images 2.0 attracted new users — particularly in emerging markets — but did not significantly change how existing users interact with ChatGPT. People downloaded the app to try the image feature. Many did not stick around.

Several emerging markets saw much stronger spikes. Pakistan, Vietnam, and Indonesia saw download increases of up to 79 percent week-over-week. These markets represent the next wave of AI adoption — populations with high smartphone penetration, growing digital literacy, and strong demand for creative tools that were previously inaccessible.

The data connects to the broader India app market story. India's app revenue crossed $300 million in Q1 2026, with generative AI downloads up 69 percent year-over-year. ChatGPT Images 2.0 is riding that wave.

Competition in AI Image Generation

The launch arrives amid intense competition. Google's Nano Banana model is already established in India. Anthropic recently launched Claude Design for quick visual creation. And platforms like ComfyUI are attracting professional creators who want more control than prompt-based tools provide.

For casual users — the selfie-to-portrait crowd — ChatGPT Images 2.0 is good enough. The barrier to entry is zero. Open ChatGPT. Upload a photo. Get a stylized result. That simplicity drives adoption in markets where users are encountering AI tools for the first time.

For professional creators and advertisers, the tool is more limited. Meta reports that over 8 million advertisers now use its generative AI ad tools, which are designed for commercial output rather than personal expression. The distinction matters: ChatGPT Images 2.0 is a consumer hit. Whether it becomes a professional tool is a different question.

Why It Matters

ChatGPT Images 2.0's India success confirms a pattern the AI industry is still learning to navigate. The largest user bases for AI tools are increasingly in emerging markets — not the US or Europe. India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Vietnam are driving download spikes that dwarf Western adoption curves.

But downloads do not equal revenue. India remains one of the lowest-spending app markets per download. The challenge for OpenAI — and every AI company chasing emerging market growth — is converting massive user numbers into sustainable revenue. Until that equation balances, India will remain AI's largest audience and one of its smallest revenue sources.
