Meta is testing an AI integration in Threads that works similarly to how Grok functions on X. The feature lets users ask Meta AI questions directly within Threads conversations and receive AI-generated responses in context. The test brings Meta's AI assistant into its fastest-growing social platform — and puts it in direct competition with Musk's Grok integration on X.
How It Works
The Threads integration allows users to tag or invoke Meta AI within posts and replies. The AI responds with context-aware answers based on the conversation thread. Users can ask questions about trending topics, request summaries of discussions, or get factual information without leaving the app.
The feature is similar to how Grok operates on X, where users can ask Elon Musk's AI assistant questions within the timeline. But Meta's version benefits from a key advantage: Meta AI is powered by the company's latest Muse Spark model, which the company says outperforms Grok on most benchmarks.
The integration is currently in limited testing. Meta has not announced a timeline for broader rollout.
Why Threads Matters for Meta AI
Threads has grown rapidly since launch. The platform now has over 300 million monthly users. Adding AI gives Meta another high-frequency touchpoint for its assistant — joining WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, and Facebook as surfaces where Meta AI is already embedded.
The strategy mirrors what Google is doing with Gemini. Google has embedded its AI across Chrome, Maps, Workspace, YouTube, Google TV, and millions of cars. Meta is doing the same across its social platforms. Every app in the Meta ecosystem is becoming an AI surface.
The Grok Comparison
The comparison to Grok is inevitable but unflattering for X. Grok's user numbers have been declining. Musk admitted under oath during the OpenAI trial that xAI ranks behind Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google in AI capabilities. And xAI is increasingly pivoting toward selling infrastructure rather than competing on model quality.
Meta has significant advantages. A larger user base across more platforms. A newer and reportedly more capable AI model. And an advertising business that can monetize AI engagement directly through improved ad targeting.
The risk is user reaction. When X integrated Grok, some users found it intrusive. AI-generated responses appearing in social conversations can feel uninvited — especially when users are looking for human perspectives rather than machine-generated answers. Meta will need to balance visibility with subtlety.
The Anti-Doomscrolling Irony
The integration is worth noting in the context of the growing anti-doomscrolling movement. Startups like Bond and Noscroll are explicitly building products designed to pull users away from social media feeds. Adding AI to Threads moves in the opposite direction — making the feed stickier by giving users another reason to stay.
Whether AI-enhanced social feeds represent a better user experience or a more sophisticated engagement trap is a question the industry has not yet answered.
What It Means
Meta AI in Threads is a small feature test with larger implications. It signals that AI assistants are moving from standalone apps and sidebars into the social feeds where people already spend their time. The AI industry is no longer just about building better chatbots. It is about embedding AI into every conversation — including the ones happening between humans on social media.
